Inspired by prolific possession winners Stephen Coniglio and Lachie Whitfield, and Jesse Hogan in attack with four goals, the Giants set up a preliminary final clash against Collingwood with a shock 23-point win, getting up 13.15 (93) to 9.16 (70).

The brave Giants had winners across every line while several Power players picked the worst possible time to have an off night.

The win inspired the now-regular production line of top-tier internet memes, led by the Giants’ social media team themselves, who have won plaudits for their humorous approach.

The Big Big Sound went berserk back in 2019 when the Giants made their maiden Grand Final.

While the meme has been bubbling away behind the scenes since, the Giants haven’t reached the same heights as the club’s best finish was a semi-final in 2021.

But with success has resurrected the meme — and the internet is loving it.

Immediately ready for the final siren, the Giants posted a clip from the 1997 comedy hit “Bean”, showing Rowan Atkinson’s iconic character taking his rightful place in first class – or as it was labelled by Giants social land content lead Jacob Gaynor’s team, a preliminary final.

Gaynor’s team also cheekily referenced the now-infamous snake that made its way into the forward pocket at Blacktown International Sportspark during the afternoon, delaying the GWS-Richmond AFLW fixture by around half an hour.

“Not again,” the Giants tweeted with a picture of an orange snake lolly on the playing surface at Adelaide Oval.

The Giants’ cult hit team song Big Big Sound, considered by many to be the best song in Australian sport, has also served as the basis for a number of memes, auditory or otherwise.

Family Guy and Simpsons references were in plentiful supply on social media, and an interview with Harry Angus, formerly of jazz-funk band The Cat Empire, recirculated courtesy of comedian Josh Garlepp.

Angus, in the interview, claims that he receives around $100 in royalties every time the Giants win.

The Giants now set up a mouth-watering penultimate clash on Friday September 22 at 7.50pm at the MCG with Collingwood, while Carlton play Brisbane at The Gabba at 5.15pm the next day.

Toby Greene starred with 15 disposals and three goals, and said the Giants came into the clash high on confidence.

“We were full of confidence, we knew if we played our best footy, we were going to be hard to beat,” Greene said.
